We meet for each session at Famara Beach. First timers start with the basics of board control, paddling, catching waves and standing up. During the safety talk and warm-up, you get prepared for surfing, and I see where to pick things up with everybody. In the three-hour session, we’ll come back to the beach several times: for feedback, troubleshooting and new things to add.

Before you arrive, you’ll receive an overview of the forecast, including the better, weaker and possible no-go days during your stay. Once you arrived on the Island, I’ll keep you updated during each session and help you adjust the schedule when needed. Any session cancelled because of an official weather or swell warning will be rescheduled where possible — or refunded if it cannot be completed during your stay.

Who are Beginner & Refresher Lessons for?

These lessons are not just for first-time surfers. They are specifically designed to bring first-timers together with surfers who have already completed multiple beginner courses or surf camps but feel stuck on a plateau.By deliberately keeping my groups small, Take Off is meant to bridge the gap between basic and intermediate coaching, allowing for individual treatment in a group setting . Whether you are catching your very first wave or find yourself trapped somewhere in between, you won’t get "just another beginner surf lesson."If you are a complete beginner, you will learn the essentials from scratch. If you already have experience but feel stuck, this is your opportunity to identify your missing links—and break through to the next level through focused troubleshooting and deliberate practice.

When do the surf sessions take place?

The lesson window shifts day by day with the most suitable tide.Starting early between 8:00 and 9:30 on Mondays, the lessons shift slightly forward every day. By Friday, we usually start between 11:30 and 13:30. This always depends on the tidal period.Every other weekend, the choice is between surfing at sunrise or facing the weekend crowd. The weekends in between are more comfortable, around 10:00.You will get the exact schedule for your requested dates on request.

How are flexible lessons scheduled around the weather?

When you book, you’ll receive a lesson schedule in which the most favourable tide windows have already been taken into account.A day before you arrive on the island, you’ll receive an updated forecast and my recommendation: which days are likely to offer better conditions and on which days a session may not be possible. If you want to plan earlier, just let me know—forecasts are usually reasonably reliable around three days in advance. After your arrival, the plan is continuously updated. After each lesson, we’ll look ahead at the upcoming conditions together. If the next update falls on one of your free days, you’ll receive it via WhatsApp or email. This does not mean that conditions will always be perfect. Forecasts can change, and some days may simply be better than others. If you have several free days and prefer to surf only on the most promising ones, I’ll help you prioritise them.

Can I move a lesson, and what happens if conditions are unsuitable?

Yes. Flexible lessons can be moved to make room for rest days, other activities or personal plans, provided you let me know by 20:00 on the previous day. Whenever possible, I’ll help you choose a day that looks less promising for surfing, so you don’t accidentally miss one of the better sessions.Changes requested after 20:00 cannot be considered for the following day. The session then counts as a late cancellation and cannot be replaced or refunded. If conditions are unsuitable or unsafe for your level, the lesson will be moved to another suitable day. If no suitable replacement is possible during your stay, the affected session will be refunded.Rescheduling lessons because of unsuitable conditions is part of the plan. Choosing to skip a suitable day is different: if the remaining days do not provide suitable conditions, the missed lesson cannot be replaced or refunded. I’ll help you assess the forecast before you decide.

Do I need previous experience or a certain level of fitness?

It depends. You do not need previous surf experience. But of course, you should feel comfortable in the water and around waves. As for fitness, it is quite simple: surfing is a sport whose intensity changes with the conditions. The fitter you are, the better. You do not need to be an athlete, but it helps if you generally enjoy being active and doing sports. If you are unsure, just let me know and I can advise you on which format and which season might suit you best.

Do you offer packages?

Yes, there are compact packages for those who want to get as much as possible out of a short stay. Or you can book as many flexible lessons as you want in one request and spread them flexibly over your stay.

Can I still learn to surf as an adult?

Yes, you can still learn to surf as an adult. Whether you are 25, 35, 45 or older: age alone is not the decisive factor. More important are swimming ability, basic fitness, mobility and a realistic attitude towards the ocean.Do not worry too much about age — especially if you live an active, sporty lifestyle. If you are unsure, we can look together at whether a group session, private coaching or a more adapted start would suit you best.

Is there a transfer service?

I do not offer a transfer service for organisational reasons. Contact me anyway if you cannot rely on public transport or hire a car, and I will help you find a solution.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Yes. Being able to swim confidently is a basic requirement. Even in beginner-friendly conditions, the ocean remains a dynamic environment. If you still feel unsure in the water, a group course is often not the best place to start. In that case, private lessons or open-water swimming can be the more sensible first step.

Beach ready? Lessons essentials:

What to bring for your surf lesson

Sun protection ☀️
Bring sun protection, even on cloudy days. Surf zinc or a zinc stick usually stays on best in the water.
Drinking water 💧🥤🍉
Salt water, sun, wind and exercise make you thirsty. Bring at least 0.5 l, ideally around 1 l per person, and if you like, a little snack: fruits, nuts or a muesli bar are ideal to refuel briefly during the session.
Flip-flops or Sandals 🩴
Comfort and protection for your feet: Hot sand in summer, pebbles in winter
Towel & swimwear 👙🩲
Bring a towel and swimwear for under the wetsuit. Tight swimwear is usually more comfortable than loose boardshorts.
Suitable clothes 🌦️
In Winter and on windy days something cosy and warm to wear after the session. A beanie is a usefull protection for wet ears in any weather.
Swimming & health 🏊 ⚕️
You should be able to swim. Please mention injuries, allergies, diabetes or other concerns when booking.
Jewellery & piercings 🤔
Best left at home. They can get lost or create unnecessary injury risks.
All in Hand 🎒?
A small backpack or comfortable bag keeps everything you need for the session together and leaves your hands free to carry your board.
